Charles Percy AUSTIN

1883 - 1948

Charles Percy Austin was born in Denver, Colorado on March 23, 1883. He was a pupil of Henry Read at the Denver School of Art, Twachtman at the Art Students League in New York City, and Castelucho in Paris. He moved to Los Angeles in 1908 and took over Granville Redmond’s old studio. Periodically he lived at Mission San Juan Capistrano where he produced many paintings of the mission. Many of his paintings were lost when his studio burned in 1915. He specialized in poster designs and illustrated Capistrano Nights (1930). His last years were spent in Santa Monica where he died on March 17, 1948. Member: Laguna Beach Art Ass'n (cofounder); California Art Club; California Watercolor Society.
